Before birth
Preserving your placenta for your Placenta Keepsake
Would you like to preserve your placenta after birth? A few preparations before labour make it clear what needs to happen immediately after birth.
The Care Box is an add-on to your Placenta Keepsake.
Placenta Care Box
A complete leakproof storage and shipping kit with an inner container, second leakproof bag, sealable outer box, registration card and packing instructions. Collection or transport is arranged with Milksy after birth.
01Discuss your wishes before labour+
Tell your midwife, obstetrician or hospital in advance that you wish to keep the placenta after birth. Add this to your birth plan as well.
If you give birth in hospital, remember that each hospital may have its own procedure. You may need to sign a form before taking the placenta home.
If the placenta must be examined for medical reasons, this always takes priority. Tell us as soon as possible. We cannot accept a placenta that has been placed in formalin or another preservative.
We would like to keep the placenta after birth to have a Placenta Keepsake made. Please do not discard it and leave the umbilical cord and membranes as intact as possible. Do not add formalin, alcohol, salt or any other substance. Medically necessary examination always takes priority.
02Immediately after birth+
Preferably ask your midwife or another healthcare professional to pack the placenta.
- Leave the placenta, umbilical cord and membranes completely intact. Even for a Keepsake without the cord, it may remain attached; we will remove it carefully later.
- Do not wash or rinse the placenta.
- Do not cut, pierce, press or squeeze the placenta.
- Lay the placenta as flat as possible in the designated leakproof inner packaging.
- Place this packaging in the second leakproof bag and then in the sealable outer box.
- Complete the registration card with your name, order number, date of birth and the time the placenta was cooled.
- Cool the placenta as quickly as possible.
If the hospital has already placed the placenta in a securely closed container, do not open it. Place the entire container in the second leakproof packaging from our box.
03Storage in the refrigerator+
Can Milksy collect the placenta within 24 hours? Keep it refrigerated.
- Keep the placenta at no more than 4 °C.
- Place it in the closed box, preferably in a separate refrigerator.
- Using a household refrigerator? Put the closed box at the bottom and keep it completely separate from food.
- Do not store the placenta in the refrigerator door.
- Make sure the packaging cannot leak, tip over or be compressed by other products.
If a refrigerator is temporarily unavailable, keep the closed box in a sturdy cooler with fully frozen ice packs and contact us immediately. Refrigerated storage is preferred when we can collect quickly, so we can position the placenta and cord carefully before the first freeze.
04When should the placenta be frozen?+
If the placenta cannot be handed to Milksy refrigerated within 24 hours, freeze it as soon as possible at –18 °C or colder.
- Lay the placenta flat in the sealable box.
- Place the umbilical cord loosely beside the placenta.
- Do not fold the placenta or cord.
- Do not place heavy products on top of the box.
- Record the date and time of freezing on the registration card.
- Keep the placenta completely frozen from that moment onwards.
Once frozen, the placenta must not thaw and then be refrozen.
05Collection or shipping+
Tell us as soon as possible after birth that the placenta is ready. Together we arrange collection or transport to Milksy.
Collection
Keep the placenta refrigerated or frozen as agreed until it is collected.
Shipping
Never ship the placenta on your own initiative or hand it in at a regular parcel point.
- The placenta must be completely frozen.
- Use only the complete Milksy transport box.
- Follow the enclosed packing instructions.
- Use only the shipping label supplied by Milksy.
- Transport must be scheduled by Milksy in advance.
Pack the placenta only shortly before the agreed collection time. We will tell you exactly when and how to do this.
Always contact us if
- the placenta may have been unrefrigerated for more than two hours;
- it has been in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours;
- you do not know how it was stored in hospital;
- a frozen placenta has thawed fully or partially;
- it came into contact with formalin, alcohol, salt, disinfectant or another substance;
- it was sent to pathology for examination;
- it was born damaged, incomplete or in parts;
- your healthcare professional identified an infection or another concern.
Do not discard the placenta immediately when something went differently than planned. Contact us first so we can assess what may still be possible.
Never do this
- Do not leave the placenta at room temperature unnecessarily.
- Do not store it loose or in only one thin bag.
- Do not wash, rinse or treat it yourself.
- Do not add water, salt, herbs, oil, alcohol or preservative.
- Do not remove the umbilical cord or membranes yourself.
- Do not freeze the placenta more than once.
- Do not ship it without a prior arrangement with Milksy.
